SUMMARY
While shipping is the most efficient mode of transport per distance travelled, if the carbon emissions from the shipping industries were combined this would rank as the sixth biggest country for emissions in the world.? Until recently shipping has been largely absent from discussions on tackling climate change and air pollution. Now, policy makers, operators, owners, and others in the maritime industry are starting to take action.
Solent University is part of a research and innovation collaboration to look at the options for green technology in the maritime industry. The ultimate goal is the introduction of low-carbon shipping technologies in a very conservative sector. This project will pilot the following:
SPEAKER
Dr Laurie Wright – Southampton Solent University
Dr Laurie Wright is an Associate Professor of Marine Sustainability and founding director of the Centre for Marine Sustainability at Solent University. An expert in maritime decarbonisation, he leads a multidisciplinary team delivering research and innovation to understand and address the global challenges facing our oceans. Taking a systems approach, research in the Centre is discovering clean alternatives to fossil fuels used in ships, investigating the impacts of marine pollution, and studying the safety of those working at sea.
We will open the meeting from 7:00pm so people can settle in, chat etc. There will be a break between talk and Q&A when people can chat etc. It's not the same as live but closer than I thought
We will stream the event on YouTube Live Please bear with us as we adapt to the challenge of broadcasting live events. There may be glitches or poor sound quality.
If you missed a talk or would like to go over some of it again you can watch here on our YouTube channel.

SUMMARY
Join David Jamieson as he explores his work in quantum technology and looks at how we plan to build the first quantum machines.
Einstein’s most revolutionary idea, the light quantum, led to the concept for a radical new type of computer. This computer would use the strange rules of quantum mechanics to process information encoded in quantum bits, otherwise known as qubits.
In this talk you will find out more about how these large-scale devices may be able to solve important problems that cannot be solved by classical machines. And about some of the formidable scientific and technical obstacles that would need to be overcome, through the use of unprecedented precision to manipulate and interrogate single atoms.
SPEAKER
David Jamieson is a Professor of Physics at the University of Melbourne. He has a PhD from Melbourne and held postdoctoral fellowships at Caltech (USA) and the University of Oxford (UK).
David has served terms as Head of School and President of the Australian Institute of Physics. His research expertise in the field of ion beam physics applied to test some of the key functions of a revolutionary quantum computer constructed in silicon in the ARC Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology.
In 2020 David received a Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship to work on new ideas for engineering silicon with single atoms. He is also a Fellow of both the Australian Institute of Physics and the Institute of Physics (UK).

SUMMARY
The Royal Society’s annual Summer Science Exhibition (6 - 10 July 2022) returns to central London this summer, offering a free interactive experience for anyone curious about the latest advances in science and technology. Get hands-on with berry-powered solar cells, find out how you could join the hunt for unknown species in your back garden, or meet the scientists designing remote-healing technology.
Join us at the weekend to explore our drop-in workshops, or visit during the week to meet the budding scientists at our Young Researcher Zone, where students from the Partnership Grants scheme will be exhibiting their research. Families can explore the exhibition at their own pace during the weekend with workshops for all ages and interests, as well as a dedicated children’s area, child-friendly menu, and buggy parking available.
If you are unable to come to London for the event, we will have curated digital content available on demand, including livestream demonstrations and interviews so you can still experience the buzz of the exhibition floor.

ADVANCE BOOKING IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TALK.

SUMMARY
Are humans the only dreamers on Earth? Dreams provide an invaluable window into the cognitive and emotional lives of nonhuman animals, giving us access to a seemingly inaccessible realm of animal experience.
Join David Peña-Guzmán as he explores behavioural and neuroscientific research on animal sleep with philosophical theories of dreaming. From suggestions that many animals run ‘reality simulations’ while asleep to the profound implications for contemporary debates about animal cognition, ethics, and rights.
In this talk, discover a convincing case for animals as conscious beings and examine the thorny scientific, philosophical, and ethical questions it raises.
SPEAKER
David M. Peña-Guzmán received his PhD in Philosophy from Emory University in 2015. His dissertation, 'The Rational Turn in Continental Philosophy: Bachelard, Canguilhem, Foucault,' is an interrogation of the school of historical epistemology that appeared in France sometime between the 1920s and the 1950s.
David works on historical epistemology, animal studies, phenomenology, feminist theory, bioethics, and critical social theory. His work has appeared in journals such as 'Foucault Studies', 'The Journal of French and Francophone Philosophy', and 'Hypatia'.
